Last week I started sharing three mystery heart musings that I wrote for this season. Below is the second one, originally written exactly seven years ago, May 1, 2017.
2024 update: As a sign of the times, I have added to the original photo of the sparrow in our garden of grace. I am an information sciences professor after all! A real sparrow is perched on a robotic arm called Sparrow in an Amazon warehouse. Sparrow can pick more then 65% of items in a typical warehouse in just seconds for each item! Amazon is also testing other robotic arms Robin and Cardinal for helping fulfill customer orders faster and better. Now, the mystery musing from seven years ago.
Do not love the world or the things in the world. The love of the Father is not in those who love the world; for all that is in the world — the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, the pride in riches — comes not from the Father but from the world. And the world and its desire are passing away, but those who do the will of God live for ever. I John 2: 15-17
This was one of my lectionary readings last week, and it is a provocative one. If we can't desire and enjoy even the good things of this world, why the heck are we here?
