The Comfort of Christian Connection
Jesus Got Us!
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort. (2 Corinthians 1: 2-3)
In the midst of a relentless storm that lasted 65 months, the quiet joy of a 24/7 Christian faith and connection became my anchor. Despite the challenges, my family and I found a new mantra: Jesus got this!
Today, I share the intimate story of how my family grew in faith. It’s a difficult story for me to tell. What had promised to be an adventure serving God and building community suddenly became a terrible nightmare. God, the hero of this story, however, rescued and redeemed us so beautifully that even the new mantra my family gained — Jesus got this — was transformed into Jesus got us!
The Call to Louisville
"You’ve lived 25 years here," my friend pointed out, very concerned. "How are you so sure that it’s God calling you to Louisville?"
How was I sure? At a pivotal retreat at Zephyr Cove, I met a young seminary student from Louisville. Our conversation sparked a connection that felt divinely ordained, prompting me to ask in my Examen diary, 'Dear God, is this an indication of your will?'
I was reluctant to leave the home and city I loved. We had built a good life here, lots of friends, besides family. I’d thought we’d retire here. I considered myself a Californian. Even though I wasn’t born here, on what’s sometimes called the Black Gold Riviera — because so many of our So Cal beaches carry black tar from the offshore drilling for oil and have many scenic luxury resorts, in contrast to the plain white sandy beaches of my native land — this is where I’ve lived the longest. The waters of the Pacific Ocean that lap on these shores are colder than the tropical ones I grew up with but they’re always whispering, “Home sweet home!”
Obedience and Challenges: Into the Storm
With mixed feelings but unwavering faith, I obeyed the call to Louisville. Little did I know, the path ahead would bring storms, thunder, and lightening — in more ways than one.
