Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14), which coincides with Ash Wednesday this year, is more than a celebration of romantic love. When our son was in elementary school, I vicariously enjoyed the classroom tradition of exchanging Valentine’s Day cards and treats. It was such a lovely experience that I began to give valentines to my graduate students! And, in my own family, it continues to be a day when we unashamedly exhibit love across the different generations with handmade valentines, like the one in the photo!
I share the global history of Valentine’s Day, a celebration of the affection and love we enjoy and practice as Christians, parents, siblings, friends, family, and even strangers through acts of kindness. I conclude with a biblical analysis of love, new seeker and faith deconstruction movements, and the ‘He Gets Us’ Super Bowl ad campaigns.
