May 15, 2024 - Volume 17, Issue 21.

Welcome to Eyes on Christ, a weekly letter, every Wednesday from my heart to yours. I’ve been writing it since 2007, free, open on the WWW, subscription via email, and RSS feeds. Last year I moved it to Substack. If this is your first time, I am glad to have you here. There’s a roundup of my writings from 08/07/23 - 01/08/24 here. Eyes on Christ can also be listened to on the Substack app. As always, thanks for reading or listening.

On the last day of April, a raptor that frequents our garden of grace got my attention. Initially, I thought it was a peregrine falcon but Scott and I are now sure that it’s a Cooper’s Hawk. Anyway, the lovely drama that’s unfolding among our garden visitors and inhabitants, inspires my parable. May it bless you.

The Parable of the Hawk and the Doves

And Jesus gathered his disciples and said, "Listen closely, for I will tell you a parable about the kingdom of heaven." A quiet suburban garden surrounded by the busyness of the world, often attracted a Cooper's hawk. This hawk had made its nest high up in the branches of a tree in the nearby park. But he’d often be found soaring the skies, suddenly swooping to snatch a prey or perch atop the garden umbrella pole. You see, not far away, in a hanging basket on the garden's patio, a pair of gentle mourning doves had built their nest and started a family.
