Welcome to Eyes on Christ, a weekly Wednesday newsletter from my heart to yours. I am writing early this week, on Tuesday, to urge you to join me in prayer for all who are affected by the severe Memorial Holiday weekend storm. I also share another ‘Sisu’ story inspired by the OT prophet Nahum, a name which means comfort.

Severe storms and a tornado have caused widespread devastation this Memorial Day weekend, tragically resulting in 25 deaths and leaving over a million homes without power. The worst-hit area is Texas, where nearly 1 million customers are affected. Other states suffering significant power outages include Kentucky with 50,000 homes, Florida with 42,000, Arkansas with 35,000, West Virginia with 29,000, Missouri with 15,000, and Louisiana with 14,000. Other states affected by the Memorial holiday weekend storm include Oklahoma and North Carolina.

The storm has moved towards the northeast, but many residents in these southern states are still struggling without electricity. Louisville, Kentucky, holds a special place in my heart. I also have readers here. Kentucky, and Louisville too like Texas, face a lengthy recovery process for power restoration.

In these challenging times, I urge you to join me in praying for all the affected states and peoples, for swift recovery, and for healing from the damage caused to their homes, buildings, and lives by these severe weather events.

The righteous cry, and the Lord hears them and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and will save those whose spirits are crushed. Psalm 34:17-18

Prayer from the Book of Common Prayer

For Those in the Armed Forces (adapted for natural disasters):

O God, the protector of all who trust in you, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy: Increase and multiply upon us your mercy; that, with you as our ruler and guide, we may so pass through things temporal, that we lose not the things eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10

Now, Sisu’s story of Nahum.
